Friday biz and tha shizz

monkey

Hiya,
Tha Biz

Two new pages of Deth Bunny up. two new pages penciled. LET THE INKY MADNESS BEGIN! The end of april should see a store page, the first print issue, and tshirts!
I finally grok flash enough to use it functionally. I am redoing my first “Lessons learned From Dreams” with better timing, more interesting animations and fun nonsense.
LETS HERE IT FOR FUN NONSENSE! (KERMIT THE FROG CHEER)
The second LLFD page is gonna be about me, my rabbit, and a quantum assassin dude. I am totally gonna butter his muffin and I do not mean buttsecks! holy crap I do not know when this will be done but I will have process work up as I go.

Tha Shizz

Mind MGMT: Frackin brilliant comic by Matt Kindt. Secret psychic spy organization rules the world. nothing is what it seems. nice water color artwork. Shitty review on my part!

The punk singer: Kathleen Hanna is so dreamy. In that super hot feminist super hero kinda way.

heavy metal & rock and rule:If you wanna talk “influential to my tastes to this day” these two movies where on the same video tape back in the day when you would tape shit off of cable on “slp” three movie to a tape and then watch them until it broke.

Tj & Amal: super gay road trip. wonderful character development and pretty nice art ranging from sketches to fully realized and painted landscapes. by super gay I mean that it is about two homosexual guys on a cross country trip falling in love. so if that isnt your thing…well, you should still check it out. it’s that well done.

saint for rent: time travel web comic. highly entertaining and mildly animated.

Deth Bunny Update

Blog

Hiya, Long time.
How are you?
Really?
wow.
and your Mom?
man thats great.
Me, well I’ve been buried under seven feet of snow for months now! I took a couple of classes. one went well and the other, not so much, but I still managed to get something out of it. There was a death in the family after a prolonged illness. I grew a beard. Production got all fershnagled on Deth Bunny but I have a new page, another one for next week and enough to finish the first issue!

so things have been good and things have been bad. so it goes. with any luck we are done with the season of death and move into the season of life and rebirth. Lots of folks gettin hitched this year. And babies!

Anyway, here’s some shizz I’ve been working on.

Stray Bullets

Blog

stray_bullets_41_coverso, yeah. Stray Bullets by written, drawn, and lettered David Lapham, and published by him and his wife. Not sure how I missed this.
The first issue in like nine years came out recently and all the comic blogs I read flipped the fuck out. So I picked it up.I also found a hand full of back issues for pretty cheap. Well, I read every issue I bought. This says something when I have a stack of new releases that I’ve had for a month or two that I havent bothered with yet.

The premise is a series of standalone crime stories set in a shared universe that when read together form a larger story arc. They are set in and around the late seventies and the eighties. Ultimately it feels like a crime noir version of freaks and geeks, or a seventies gangster movie crossed with the bad new bears, or John Hughes making a detective story. It is extremely cinematic. It also takes it’s time with the characters but in that each story is self contained you don’t get that “last cookie” feel of the tune in next week bullshit.

The art is solid and expressive but doesn’t compete with the story telling. Only after closer inspection and divorcing your attention from the story itself do you realize that David Lapham is a really talented and solid cartoonist. Comic artist can be really “show-off-y” but the best are the ones who are both brilliant and almost invisible.

I kinda understand the collective freakout, now. It’s a title that now will forever be in my pull list.

Read the first four issues for free here.

Lessons Learned From Dreams

It was a mansion set back from the road by a long and winding driveway.
By the time we made it up the drive way it was engulfed in flames. The police arrived and were rounding up the ones who had escaped the conflagration. They had symbols craved into their foreheads and cheeks, tattoo wrapping around their lips and winding down their necks. When the women saw us she spit and cursed. The language she used made my head start to pound and my nose bleed. One of the cops hit her across the face with rifle butt. She fell tot he ground and started crying.
“He would have made the whole earth pure!”
The fist of the goliath shot up through the mansion. the smell of burnt flesh surrounded us. The would be god of the world struggled to lift itself out from its underground lair and screamed and burned.the pasty white worm flesh cracked and blackened int he flames. The markings and symbols on the skin of the gold were the ones his children had made on their faces.
The burnt god crumbled into a heap and its soul wafted away in the wind and smoke.

Lessons Learned From Dreams

The denizens of hell are not necessarily a bad bunch, they have just gotten a bad rap over the years. Like any one or anything else they have their strengths and their flaws, families and rivialries. Some of them yes, are hardwired to be bad; but overcoming your nature can be a noble aspiration. The mall where I work is integrated and I have met some wonderful..uh..people. The Asian demon kid who owns the bike shop has the single best manga collection I have ever seen and wants to be a manga artist one day. I gotta say, he is pretty good. His cousins work across the way in the coffee shop. If you havent had hellfire brewed coffee yet than, brother, you are missing out. We found a family of de-powered flesh cubes int he foyer yesterday. Damien Agato, the kid from the bike shop sneered and said we should flamethrower them. A lot of demons consider flesh cubes to be vermin because they reproduce so rapidly and as a result small like ass. We jump started them and discovered that they were a family of distinct individuals, and the reason for the constant reproduction was because the demons always flamethrowered them. they work as custodians in the mall now and provide most of the electricity as they exude it. Little Pink Rhombus Jr wants to be a comedian though. He had the Coffee Devils laughing so hard one them wet himself. The triffid girl has a flower shop, she has really come into her own since she crash landed and destroyed that town. She learned the language and is applying for plant citizenship. And I’l be damned if don’t think she’s cute.

As it turns out, most things just want to be happy and with tolerance, understanding, and yes some flame retardent clothing you will find that the common ground you share is much larger than your differences.

Except for werewolves. Man, fuck those guys.

No new comic page today (LATE)

Blog, Lessons Learned From Dreams

(Edit: this was supposed to go up jan 18. but some things took longer, there was a snow storm and a zombie apocalypse! really!) yeah, so I need to make a set -in-stone character sheet for my main character as I’m noticing he’s drawn pretty off model in every thing so far. ( I am still drawing a character sheet, but here is the new page. Need to keep that forward momentum. I would like to take this time to mention that I am not wearing pants.) Probably due to there not really being a model. The vikings are pretty developed but its not a comic about Jeff and Bob, the ambiguously gay vikings; it’s a barbarian revenge (yes thats a genre) comic about a mildly psychopathic rabbit. In its stead I’m publishing the first LLFD page. It moves! horray! This is gonna get its own page. I have two more of these in scripting and story boarding currently. One a month seems to be reasonable for this amount of work. ( this is a generous assumption. this was the first one and my first real attempt into animation. As a result I am now taking two animating classes and have a couple of hundred bucks worth of books. The first thing you learn is how much you dont know.)

As I look at it (DB) some elements are really starting to gel and others need…simplification for lack of better word. Less detail but more information.

Here are some of my new DB Banners. I’m also working on custom navigation.

Blog

meh wordpress, you make me crazy, I have this “publicize” plugin which does not do that. or more specifically it will publicize my posts but not my comics and as much as like to have an audience when I rant about nonsense I would much rather people see my comics. So new Deth Bunny page here. I was working on anew page last night and it feels like it might be a good a idea to do some character sheets. I do a lot of guessing and guessing sucks cus maybe its right and maybe its not so right. I drew a bunch of new headers for the strip this weekend because the one I have is a stacked logo in a landscape box. its awkward.

Finished one of two final animations last night for my 1st LLFD comic. The last one is spinning cycle, that should be fun. you know like surgery. then i am going to rip the whole page apart and reconstruct it piece by piece and color it. Which will take less time than it sounds. I also started an animation class this week and I think that it will push everything forward quite a bit. Huzzah for forward motion.

Shiz I’m into this week:

bird boy really well drawn webcomic

white tower not so well drawn webcomic, but it works cus everything is on model and the story is compelling.

ugh, not much this week, I’ve been buried in work and havent been reading/watching/listening to anything new.

DB Page Four (five?)

Blog

Hiya,
Missed my update yesterday which is dumb since I was home all day. Stupid snow.
Working on a new header for the DB stuff. It’s better than nuthin but still needs work.

DB_Header_web

I’m gonna upload the new page today so I dont have to deal  next week.

Animation is real hard work! It is meticulous and time consuming. Plus I dont fully understand the mechanics which makes it even harder. I have two more animated elements in my first LLFD strip and I think that might push my release of that towards the end of the month. I am storyboarding the second one currently. I actually should start trying to write new ones as I have fallen out of the habit.  I have a backlog of ones I havent published though. But I should get back in the habit of trying to write one everyday, whether it sucks or not. It is a far better habit than playing Marvel Avengers Alliance until I’m late for work everyday.

Shiz I am into this week:

Allred and Fraction’s FF Is wonderful and fun

Arrow is full of awesome torsos

Upstream Color is better than Primer. I hope someday some one backs a truck full of money onto Shane Carruth’s front lawn. Dude needs to make all of the movies. Yes, its that good.

Umbral is pretty dope. Loved Wasteland but I guess that is ending soonish? Umbral feels like an old children’s fantasy movie, back when children’s fantasy movies where weird and dark and violent and not sanitized.

Ty Seagal makes me happy in a fuzzed out distorted kinda way.

EYEM ON THA VACATIONS.

Actually I just got a couple of extra days off. I don’t get vacations, I’m poor and didn’t finish college. But It means that I got the new Deth Bunny Page up! In actuality I took it and split it into three strips. It seems like it might read a little better that way. I will also have the full page up ( and for sale). Today I will finish up I think its page six? and start work on inking a couple more. My lettering is slowly improving. I have about another month of stuff already done and I’ll be making more pages. I think I can average about a page a week. thats my current goal.

I’m contemplating mimicking the format of this. It seems like a pretty smart way to handle webcomic stuff with out getting tied down to a limiting format. I believe the ratios they use also allow them to translate to print with relative ease. And you know ITS A COMIC BOOK A BOUT A HOT STEAM PUNK PIRATE CAPTAIN.

Since I have  a small back log of the Deth Bunny pages, I am going to finish the animated Lessons Learned From Dreams page. I also started on the second LLFD page, also animated, which I expect will take a lot longer as it will be more ambitiously animated. I am going to be taking an animation class this winter which I hope will help speed up the process. My Primary inspiration for this is the quite brilliant MOTH comic and the equally impressive Thunderpaw.

I have to go back to work tomorrow and its weighing heavily on me. I spend almost the entire time working wishing I was drawing. This shizz by Brandon Graham gives me hope. Most shizz by Brandon Graham gives me hope. It’s like how I feel about David Bowie Only with comics.

Here is the full DB page:

New Comic

Blog

So I have a couple of full pages done and I’m gonna post them one a week, cus I’m real slow at getting the done even though I have 10 penciled.
Anyway, here is the first Deth Bunny strip. its pretty basic. It was more a psychological experiment in finishing something used to build momentum. I also figured out how to put a title header on the pages designating which comic its from and how to link them so you can scroll through the different titles with out them getting all mixed up. woo hoo content delivery.

You will notice the first few pages are all different sizes and orientations. But I figure you are a tolerant bunch and will except them, no matter what size they are.

I have a few pages for the hunter too, and once I have a suitable backlog I will start posting those as well.

All the pages will ultimately be for sale and for each title  I will also be making a small run of floppies after i produce blocks of story arc. They will be cool and you will want to buy them.

So read it, subscribe to it ( do i have that set up?) tell your friends, blah blah blah.

Lessons Learned from Other Peoples Dreams

Blog, Lessons Learned From Dreams

I’m working on a full page with animations, I hope to be finished this weekend sometime. I have a bunch of sketches to post as well.

I wrote like a page and a half this morning. It needs serious editing but it felt good, I haven’t been able to capture anything for a couple of weeks.

Just found this person the internets, Emily Carrol, a cool site of this woman’s comics and portfolio. It is of particular interest to me because she does a illustrated dream journal pages. They are fully painted and rather beautiful. She also made this video game Gone Home which looks wonderful and to be a very interesting and interactive approach to story telling.

I am in the middle of a class at RISD, I have a couple of cool projects I’m working on for that but I figure I am going to do a full process post for each of them when I am finished.

huzzah.
